BBC NEWS AWARDS, 2022

BBC News - live in the Radio Theatre London Broadcasting House and streamed to 75 BBC International Bureaux
Live Producer / VT Producer / Director

A live awards ceremony held in Feb 2023 designed to celebrate the achievements of BBC Newsroom staff in the UK and internationally. It was presented by Reeta Chakrabarti and Adam Fleming with news anchors, actors Lorraine Stanley and Milly Gibson all presenting the awards to the winners.

  • 2022 News Montage - a year's worth of BBC news on multiple platforms condensed into 4'

  • An obituary film, to remember BBC News colleagues who sadly passed away in 2022. This was accompanied by live choir.

  • Comedy Sketch. Scripted, produced and directed by me and containing lead anchors from BBC News and the Creative Director, BBC News.

  • Ukraine - I was asked to include a piece about the BBC's coverage of Ukraine. I collaborated with war correspondent Lyse Doucet; and the Royal Shakespeare Company to produce something unique and poignant. This VT can be found on the home page.

REMEMBRANCE ASSEMBLY, 2022

Royal British Legion - live on Zoom and YouTube to over 340,000 KS2 children.

VT Director / Floor Manager

Responsible for creating VT content for this inaugural live assembly to engage the next generation with Remembrance. 

​

  • VT with three veterans of the Falklands and Afghanistan wars to introduce more recent conflicts (than WWI+II) to pupils, and the idea that veterans can be of their parents' generation; and also to introduce children to the concept that the veterans will be remembering their friends.

  • VT about war memorials and who & how people can remember, with Major Naveed Muhammad at the National Memorial Arboretum

  • VT with 'Alive with Poppies' poet, Tomos Roberts + school children demonstrating the connection between poppies, poetry and remembrance

  • Floor managing the live transmission which included 2 presenters; 8 guests; a piper; a singer and x40 school children

PLATINUM PARTY AT THE PALACE, 2022

BBC ONE, BBC iPlayer

Producer on 'Platinum Party at the Palace'. A live event and transmission to celebrate HM Queen's Platinum Jubilee.

​

  • Brought in to provide "creative firepower" for the event in its early stages. This included brainstorming ideas with Creative Director Matt Flint for the top secret Paddington sketch; and suggesting a collaboration with the London College of Fashion which accompanied Duran Duran's performance; and the Royal Ballet 

  • Working closely with BBC Studios Senior Head of Comms. and graphic designers to produce the poster and social media templates for the event which could be tailored by artist management teams.

  • Suggesting choirs of young singers which would appear in the 'Any Dream Will Do' moment with Jason Donovan.

  • Attending recording session with the young singers, and Mark de Lisser's choir with Team Alicia Keys plus that of the Orchestra of the Household Division, conducted by Lt Col Simon Haw.

  • Liaising with The Corps of Drums from the Bands of Her Majesty's Royal Marines, about their opening transition between the Paddington VT and Queen's performance of 'We Will Rock You', in conjunction with our choreographer.

  • Recording voiceovers with Roman Kemp and Lee Mack on site

  • Liaising with 'The One Show' on their preview film presented by Roman Kemp

  • Being a point of contact for all of the musical production companies working on the show: Really Useful Group; Cameron Mackintosh; Kenny Wax; Disney Theatrical Company.

  • Liaising and negotiating with Nandi Bushell's manager

  • Liaising with the RAF over their fanfare introduction to the National Anthem.

  • Clearing Royal archive

  • Liaising with NorthHouse Creative

  • Looking after artists backstage during the live TX

  • Responsible for delivering our Paddington VT to the world's media during transmission.

  • Teamwork makes the dream work applied to this one, on an extraordinary scale. One of hundreds making it happen.

CONCERT FOR UKRAINE APPEAL FILM, 2022

Livewire Pictures for ITV

Producer and Director for an appeal film to be shown in the 'Concert For Ukraine'. The concert raised £13million+

​

  • Volunteered to go to the Polish Ukrainian border to film an appeal film for the DEC.

  • Produced and directed presenter Rob Rinder

  • Directed a Polish film crew; Ukrainian translator; Ukrainian fixer and AP on second camera.

  • Worked with fixers to make sure contributors were suitable. We spoke with two Ukrainian families fleeing war and Red Cross Volunteers.

  • Across dynamic Risk Assessment - we did not cross into Ukraine, but there was a heightened state of security. Liaising with Polish military on location. Duty of care to crew involved and contributors telling distressing stories.

  • Remote edit producing and obtaining voiceover from presenter and translator.

Producer of the BBC News Awards. A live annual event streamed to BBC News colleagues around the world which celebrates and recognises their achievements throughout the year, also offering moments of reflection.

  • Live producing x2 presenters and x2 guests

  • Scripting and live producing a 90' streamed ceremony with all nominees on zoom.

  • Producing & directing x17 Award Presentation VTs by colleagues and celebrities

  • Producing x3 Obit films

  • Scripted, directed and produced a pastiche episode of W1A: x10 cast members including David Westhead who played Neil Reid, W1A's Controller of News and Current Affairs

  • Scripted, directed and produced a pastiche episode of 'Mastermind' with Clive Myrie, to mark the departure of the Director of BBC News, Fran Unsworth

  • Directed a 3' montage condensing a year's worth of Global BBC News on multiple platforms.

  • Scripted and collated archive footage for a VT about the BBC's role in Afghanistan. I used BBC Persian presenter (and former Bureau Chief) Daud Qarizadah and BBC Pashto presenter Sana Safi to tell very different and personal stories of their journeys with the BBC.

BBC ONE

Produced the tx of a service, live from Westminster Abbey, for BBC Events commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the burial of the Unknown Warrior, and the unveiling of the Cenotaph on Whitehall. The programme included a 25min magazine-show format prior to the arrival of TRH The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall.

VJ DAY 75: THE NATION REMEMBERS

BBC ONE

Event-Produced live VJ Day 75 service from the National Memorial Arboretum for the Royal British Legion via BBC Events.

​

Brief was to deliver a COVID-19 secure event, which reflected the diversity of the forces fighting side by side in the Far East.

  • Commissioning new pieces & musical arrangements from David Cole for the RAF Band to play throughout

  • Booking a bespoke choir and conductor to sing Ëriks EÅ¡envalds 'Only in Sleep'

  • Working with EP Sangeeta Bhaskar to represent the British Indian Army: A Sikh veteran laid a wreath alongside Price Charles; Roopa Panesar, sitar player performed; Shobna Gulati read a poem written about Kohima, by a former resident.

  • Working with the director - Julia Knowles - to achieve the most creative and poignant use of the arboretum given the COVID-19 restrictions.

  • Liaising with the Royal British Legion on all logistics. Challenges included finding and supporting 100 year old veterans willing to travel, and to make sure they were able to arrive safely to the rehearsals and event; And ensuring the tri-service military were equally represented throughout the ceremony.

Producing and scripting a fast turn around event marking 30 years of the World Wide Web at The Design Museum, London.

  • Invited audience who would ask compelling questions for the Dimbleby Lecture’s first ever Q&A,

  • Presented and moderated by Jonathan Dimbleby.

  • Exclusive content: Sir Tim said "...the web is broken" - narrowly missed 6 & 10 news slots (due to Prince Andrew)

  • Risk taking: Questions were asked by the Chief of the Secret Service, MI6, Sir Alexander Younger; a representative of the Russian Ambassador from the Russian Embassy, Ilya Erofeev; Dara O’Briain and tech industry experts.

  • Positive social media whirlwind: Claude Littner described the programme as "sensational"

LAST NIGHT OF THE PROMS, 2019

BBC ONE

Responsible for live gallery producing the grand finale of biggest classical music festival in the world.

  • Liaising with Radio 3 and Concert manager plus x3 floor managers whilst live

  • Liaising with parks around the nations regarding critical live link ups which had to be timed precisely with the RAH orchestra

  • Scripting in conjunction with EP

  • Scripting and directing x3 insert VTs - portraits of world premiere composer; soloist, Jamie Barton; and addressing the heritage of the LNOTP - including the lyrics of Jerusalem and Rule Britannia

  • Adjusting running order live according to length of fast turnaround VTs from Parks

Produced various concerts throughout the season, all recorded 'as live' and either fast turnaround edit or live-deferred.
